Maria Brophy, I have been offering a similar deal to charities that request donations for a year now and not a single one has taken me up! That's fine - my local customers won't be finding my work for pennies on the dollar at a silent auction and are beginning to understand that there truly is value to my art.

I dont just do "artwork" for charities - generally a lot more- I dont care that some art clubs reject giving to charity as they clainm themselves to be non profit- I know they are there to have a profit and run a business- And why not? art is a huge business- I try to communicate my messages of the "causes I care for" by evaluating these charities... then I go ahead with my time and energy- thanks for your great points

There are three charities I give to regularly each year, because I care about their message.

And then there are the 150 or so that ask for an art donation every year; I can't give to them all!

Through many years of giving art to charities, I can only think of one time when participating in a charity event brought me business, and that was the one time that I happened to be paid to participate.

So now what I do is this: I offer the art to the charity for a share in the sale price of the piece. If the piece doesn't sell at the starting bid price that I set, then I get the piece back.

If it sells, everyone wins! The charity makes money, I get paid, and the buyer is one happy collector.
